Chapter Fifteen

“Just answer them. What can it hurt?” Lena was nothing if not practical. Logical. Two things that Brooke normally was as well. She was the epitome of logical, happy when things made sense. Her dating profile had gotten a couple of hits—okay, no, it had gotten numerous hits. She’d quickly waded through some of them and admitted to herself that there were two men who were appealing. She’d been scanning their profiles when she’d decided to give Lena a call.

“Yeah, okay. I will.”

“Promise me.” That meant more from Lena than it might have from somebody else. Brooke never made a promise to her that she didn’t intend to keep.

“I promise.”

“What are you doing with your Sunday?”

Brooke had left Macy so she could run home, take care of Rorschach, and change into more comfortable clothes. After googling the best wine to pair with popcorn, she’d pulled a full-bodied cab off her little wine rack and set it on the counter.

“I’m going to go visit my work friend, Macy. Have a little wine and munchies.” She said nothing about the movie or the popcorn. Nothing about how drawn to Macy she was. She didn’t let herself think about why.

“Oh, good. I’m glad you’re meeting new people there. Just don’t find a replacement for me, okay?” Lena did her best to play it off as teasing. Joking. But Brooke knew her friend well, could hear the tiny frisson of worry in her voice.

“Not possible. You’re irreplaceable.”

“You got that right.” The relief was clear.

“When are you coming to visit me? I miss you.” Brooke wasn’t an emotional person. Vulnerability was not something she enjoyed, and the past few years had made that even more apparent to her. But Lena was different. She was the only person on the planet that Brooke had really opened up to, the only one who knew all her deepest, darkest secrets.

So why wasn’t she telling her about Macy?

It didn’t take much effort to answer her own question. Brooke knew why, she just didn’t want to think about it. Didn’t want to analyze it. Didn’t want to even admit it.

Macy scared her.

And it wasn’t even just Macy herself. It was everything that came with her, everything she caused in Brooke. Her feelings, her thoughts, and—yes—her desires. Her desires. Did she desire Macy?

God, yes.

With a groan and a vigorous shake of her head, Brooke did her best to focus on the evening that lay ahead instead of trying to overanalyze everything that was—or wasn’t, but should’ve been—in her brain. She signed off with Lena, kissed Rorschach on the top of his furry head, gathered her purse and the wine, locked her place, and got in her car. All she wanted to do was enjoy herself. There wasn’t anything wrong with that. When her mother’s voice popped into her head to argue with her statement, Brooke turned on the radio and cranked up the volume, then began to sing along loudly, as Taylor Swift told her she needed to calm down. She so did.
