CHAPTER 11

“I thought you might know how to trick him into revealing something,” Jaxson said.

“Me? That’s Hugo’s department,” I said.

“Got it. We should let him handle it. If we tried to do something, we might be caught in one of Alistair's magic spells,” Jaxson said.

“Remember, he might be innocent. Just because we have a list of suspects doesn’t mean we haven’t overlooked someone,” I added.

“I know. As of right now, there are two left on our list—Alistair and Joseph Andrews. Though we can’t forget Esmeralda Evergreen. Dolly must have had a reason to suspect that our nursery owner might be involved in Harold's death. ”

“Dolly’s been known to exaggerate things for attention. I love the woman, but like all of us, she has her flaws. For now, how about we concentrate on Alistair? He seems like the most likely candidate.”

“My money’s on him too,” Jaxson said.

“I know you have an address, but it’s possible Alistair skipped town as soon as he put the spell on Harold. His goal would have been fulfilled—assuming he's guilty.”

Jaxson blew out a breath. “It would be the perfect crime. The killer could live across the country for all we know, put a curse on a book he knows that Harold would drool over, and then mails it to him. Harold holds onto this valuable book and then dies.”

I loved it when Jaxson thought outside the box. “Or Harold could have ordered the book from some dealer, and our person of magic could have snuck into his store after hours and put a spell on it.”

“That’s always possible,” he said.

“That brings up an issue for me. Considering Harold is this big antique expert, how didn’t he know the book was a fake? The Enigma Stone is famous—or so Bertha believes.”

Jaxson shook his head. “Denial maybe? Think about it. You receive this package in the mail—whether from an unknown source or because you ordered it. It’s something you never thought you’d see in your lifetime. The book looks like the one you’ve seen on the Internet. The titles match. What’s not to believe?”

I shrugged. “If Harold were alive, we could ask him.”

“Since it’s possible Alistair Brooklyn has regained his magical abilities, I agree with you that we should ask Hugo and Genevieve for backup,” Jaxson said.

“I’ll call Genevieve.” I dialed the Hex and Bones Apothecary, and Andorra answered. “Hey, Andorra. It’s Glinda.”

“What’s up? You want me to send Iggy back?”

I told her about our search for Harold’s murderer. “Since he might have a fair amount of power, could you see if Hugo and Genevieve can stop over at the office?”

“Sure thing.”

We chatted a bit more about what she was up to, and then I disconnected. Less than a minute later, Genevieve, along with Hugo, who was carrying Iggy, showed up at the office.

“We have the book in a safe place if that’s what you need to know,” Genevieve said.

“That’s great, but we need your help. Again.”

“Sure. What is it?”

Jaxson and I told her we’d like to visit Alistair Brooklyn, assuming he’s still in Palm Ridge.
