CHAPTER 11
Richard's eyes darted around the shop, his unease palpable. "I... I can't say more. Please, let it go."
I shook my head. I couldnât back down. Not now. "I can't do that, Richard. Not when people I care about are in danger." Iâd already told him that, but he didnât seem to understand.
I needed to find a way to get the truth out of him, but I couldn't do it alone. I glanced around the shop, my eyes landing on the door to the back room. An idea struck me.
"Excuse me for a moment, Richard. I remembered I need to find a specific herb for a potion I'm working on." Okay, that was lame. A customer wouldnât go into a back room.
I hurried back there, my heart pounding. As I closed the door behind me, I heard the faint shimmer of magic. Hugo appeared before me, his eyes filled with concern.
I gestured for him to come closer, my voice low and urgent. "Hugo, I need your help. Richard's hiding something, but I can't get him to talk. Can you use your abilities to see if he's telling the truth?"
Hugo nodded, his expression solemn. He pointed to the back door, then mimed walking with his fingers.
"You're right," I whispered. "You probably know whether heâs telling the truth or not but canât tell me. Let's slip out the back and find Iggy. He can translate for you. He should be in the Tiki Hut Grill." That meant we couldnât teleport there.
Together, we crept out the rear exit, the cool afternoon air a welcome respite from the tension inside the shop. We made our way to the Tiki Hut Grill, where I figured Iggy would be lounging on the checkout counter.
I spotted Iggy right away. He looked up, his eyes widening at the sight of Hugo and me.
"Iggy," I said, hurrying over to him. "We need your help translating what Hugo learned.â
Iggyâs tail swished with excitement. "Finally, some action! Let's do this."
We made our way up to my apartment where we could talk freely. Once inside, Hugo communicated in his mental telepathy way.
Iggy watched intently, then turned to me. "Hugo says that Richard wasn't lying, exactly, but he's definitely hiding something. There was a lot of dark magic around him, like a cloak of shadows."
I nodded, my suspicions confirmed. "So he's involved, but we still don't know how or why."
Hugo picked up Iggy and told him something else. "Hugo says there's more to this than just Richard. There's a bigger power at play here, something old and dangerous."
Worry coursed through me at Iggy's words. Whatever we were dealing with, it was far more than a simple curse.
"Thank you, both of you," I said, my voice filled with gratitude. "I couldn't do this without you." I turned to Iggy. âHugo still has work to do. Do you want to go back down to the restaurant or to the office?â
âIâm kind of full, so Iâll go to the office.â
âOkay. I wonât be long,â I told him.
