Don’t Try This at Home

One alternate approach that I do not advocate is referred to as dry wound care or anti-care, in which the crust is left undisturbed. There is no wetting or washing of the area for weeks or months, and all care and cleaning products are avoided.

The health-care community is in widespread agreement that regular cleansing with mild soap and water is appropriate in the presence of broken skin.3 Further, medical research suggests that a moist wound will heal more quickly and easily than one that is kept continuously dry.4 A wound should also undergo regular debridement (removal of dead, contaminated, or adherent tissue or foreign material) to prevent the spreading of infection to surrounding skin.5 The debridement of body piercings is accomplished by removing the crust, normally through soaking and washing.
