The echoing bellow startled the entire household.
âDemons?â sighed Uta.
âShadow devils,â screamed Gorgeous.
âCrows fighting, perhaps?â said Mandrake.
âItâs just a donkey,â Maggs told him. She was lying in his arms at the time, and her remark was muffled against his shoulder.
âWe donât have any donkeys here,â objected Mandrake. âBut Iâd better find out in case itâs trouble. Iâll be back in just a moment.â
The tree house door was no longer locked against her, but Maggs did not feel that she should take advantage. Nor was she entirely ready yet to face a diverse collection of witches and wizards. âTheyâre not all like me.â Mandrake had informed her with a smug grin.
Seeing the donkey almost at once, Mandrake flew down beside it and discovered the usual trio patting and reassuring the pathetic looking animal. âIt was starving, and Rosie rescued it,â said Peg, looking up at Mandrakeâs shocked expression.
âRosie,â Mandrake said through his teeth, âis hoping for a sainthood. But the church isnât likely to erect a statue to a witch.â
âIt was starving,â Rosie objected loudly. âAnd we have plenty of room here. Itâs not as if we have to buy food.â
âWe might have to buy a stable.â
âWe have one free already,â Rosie pointed out, ânext door to Dipper. I donât think heâd mind a donkey living where Kate used to live.â
âYou might have to change the bed.â
âWhy did it make that revolting noise?â Mandrake demanded.
âMe,â said a voice from the long grass. Everyone looked down, and the little fat snake reared its head, two blinking emerald eyes facing the sunshine. âI thought it looked quite hungry, so I went to give it a cuddle. It didnât seem to like me.â
âItâs Whistle,â sighed Edna.
Rosie was stroking Donaldâs neck. âWhistle, dear,â she said, âI know a snake is easier just being one long wriggling thing without hands and feet, but not many birds or beasts like snakes. Canât you please try and be something else?â
âI could try, I suppose,â Whistle muttered, âbut itâll take time. Itâs all very well for you lot. Youâre not dead.â
âYou donât have to come back,â said Peg. âGhostly serpents arenât necessary.â
âSo you just donât want me around?â objected the snake, his voice sounding like an offended silk.
âNo, no,â said Rosie in a hurry. âPlease stay. But be a rabbit.â
âBrainless mating machines,â muttered the snake.
âOr a bird.â
âA sparrow, I suppose, that you can stand on?â
âI love your visits,â said Rosie. âIâd love to sit for ages and talk with you.â She paused, then asked, âBy the way, did you turn up a few days ago as a big fat yellow snake?â
âCertainly not,â said Whistle. âIâm brown and green, and thatâs that.â
âOh dear,â remembered Rosie. âBut never mind. Meet Donald the donkey. Iâd like to talk to you in my own rooms, if you wouldnât mind.â She looked up as Mandrake hovered. âI was thinking of Maggs too,â she said. âWould she like to come to supper tomorrow? With all of us, I mean? Or would she be scared?â
âA human?â gasped several voices in shocked amazement.
