Zelle felt like a rat caught in a trap when she looked up at the two men who’d brought the boat to a standstill. The oars had frozen to the water, while ice surrounded the edges, pinning the wooden boat in place. They were well and truly stuck.

“Who are you?” she called to the new arrivals. “Are you the ones who betrayed your own deity?”

“We betrayed nobody,” spat the man on the right, adding an unknown phrase in his own language that sounded harsh enough for her to guess the intent.

“According to the Blessed, you betrayed Gaiva Herself,” she retaliated. “You also kidnapped my sister and attacked my grandmother. And you,” she added to the second man, “tried to steal from my shop in the middle of the night. You’re supposed to be in jail.”

“You murdered my brother,” he ground out.

An objection rose on her tongue—she hadn’t intended to kill the man, but he’d been trying to take the staff, and the Powers only knew what he’d have done to her if she hadn’t fought back. “Both of you attacked me first. Care to tell me what you did with Aurel?”

Aurel clearly wasn’t with them, but she must be nearby, otherwise they wouldn’t have left her unsupervised. No, there must be more than the two of them. She wished she’d asked the Blessed precisely how many of their number had gone rogue.

“We need your sister’s help,” said the first man. “You, however, are in our way.”

Shards of ice shot from his palms. Zelle raised the staff over her head, and the ice slammed into the wood with such force that the entire boat trembled. They were nothing but targets down here. Whatever the risks, they needed to get out of the boat.

A shriek sounded when the dragonet flew overhead, seeing they were in trouble. The two men appeared unsurprised at his appearance, though, and aimed their next attacks at the sky. Evita shouted a warning, while Zelle rose and placed a careful foot onto the solid surface of the water. Land wasn’t far off, but the ice was slippery, and the men both broke into laughter when she skidded onto her backside. The dragonet had retreated farther back, unable to get close enough to rescue her or Evita.

Scrambling to her feet, Zelle leaned on the staff while she made her way towards solid ground. One of the men took aim at her, forcing her to raise the staff to deflect his attack—and then her heart dropped like a stone when a crack appeared beneath her feet.

Zelle gave a final lunge for shore, but the crack widened, the ice splintering below her feet until she slid into the water’s icy embrace.

Kicking hard to keep her head above the water, she held onto the staff, pushing it to the surface. The man whose brother she had killed took aim at her, his face twisting in concentration as he formed a shard of ice in each palm.

Holding her breath, she dove underwater to avoid his attack.
