True to his word, Ash called the police on Wednesday evening and reported his girlfriend as missing.

As Benjamin expected, they paid a visit to him, too, and he tried to help them with their enquiries, though wasn’t sure anything he said was going to be of use. He told them about the friendship he had formed with Ellie, but how she had closed herself off in the days leading up to her disappearance.

He thought back to when he had stopped by the house on Tuesday afternoon. He had been sure he had seen Ellie at the bedroom window at the time, but now he wasn’t so certain.

‘Maybe I imagined it,’ he told the two police constables.

Feeling it was his duty, he also mentioned his concerns about Ash to them and was pleased when they gave him their assurance that they would look into the points he had raised. Benjamin knew that Ash was hiding something, just as he had known that he was bad news for Ellie. If Ash had done anything to her, he was going to make sure he didn’t go unpunished.
