Dan and Holly were seated on the porch, enjoying steaming bowls of their rabbit and squirrel stew when the ranger reached their place.

"Ahoy there!" she called when she came in sight of the cabin.

"Hey, Missy!" Holly called back, her enthusiasm genuine. The ranger was someone who could be a real friend to her.

When Missy joined them on the porch, Dan asked, "Care for some rabbit stew?" He held the bowl up for her to see.

"Smells good."

"It is," Holly said. "First time I've ever had it and I'm impressed."

"Then sure, I'll take some if you have enough."

"There's plenty," Dan said. "Grab a seat and I'll bring you some."

Missy took a seat at the patio table. Dan was back in a minute with a steaming bowl and a spoon.

Missy smiled. "Thank you. Glad to see there's someone up in these hills with a little hospitality about them."

"What's that mean?" Holly asked.

Missy stirred her bowl with the spoon. "I stopped by that Kyle Cross's place on my way up here and didn't get past the gate. That man ain't friendly at all."

"I can take him or leave him," Holly said. "Dan is a total fanboy though."

"We've all heard his shows at one time or another, or seen him quoted on the news," Missy said. "Some of his topics are interesting but there's an edge behind it." She sampled a spoonful of her stew.

"He is edgy," Dan admitted. "And probably a little manic. A little paranoid. Maybe some attention deficit disorder."

"You forgot narcissistic," Holly put in.

Dan made a gesture that he conceded the point. "That's part of his persona though. Sometimes people become the character they portray. They begin living their own legend."

"To the point they get it tattooed on their chest," Holly said.

Missy made a dismissive shake of her head. "Dan, that's just a fancy way of saying he's beginning to believe his own bullshit, which Kyle does because he's crazy." She gestured at her bowl with the spoon. "This is some good stew, by the way."

Dan grinned. "Thanks. I'm not convinced Kyle is crazy. He's one of those people who might have turned out differently if he'd gotten some treatment for his issues earlier in life. But if they had medicated him, he might not have become the figure he is today. His drive, his personality, and his mental state have all worked together to make him the centerpiece of a media empire."

"Now we're living in his empire," Holly said.

"And we're having to deal with his 'persona,’" Missy added. "I'm not buying it. The guy isn't just quirky, he's hiding something. He was all sketchy with me this morning. I've been doing this long enough that I know when someone is being evasive."

"Are you thinking he had something to do with the missing mayor?" Holly asked.

Dan's guts knotted, surprised Holly would just come out and ask that, but she must know what she was doing. With her law enforcement background, she had more insight into investigative matters than Dan.

Missy frowned. "I'm not sure if he did or not, but he raised my hackles a little this morning.
