CHAPTER FIFTEEN

“Klaineh ganovim hengt men; groisseh shenkt men.”

“Petty thieves are hanged; big thieves are pardoned.”

I got back to the hospital about two, in plenty of time to prepare for my afternoon patients but too late for Dink’s conference with the worrisome bunch of lobbyists. I didn’t like passive-aggressive behavior in others, but I myself did an excellent job of either arriving late or not at all to most staff meetings. I’ve found that if you can put a title to a behavior, it’s much more likely you can get away with it.

“Dr. Montague said to tell you he is not a happy analyst, Gritz. He also said to remind you that you’ve used up your excuses.”

“I’ll take care of it, Essie.” I’d never met a happy analyst in my entire career. I needed to warn Dink about having too-high expectations. “Any other messages?”

“Pete Reid at the Citizen-Times has called twice. He says he’d like for you to come by his house at soon as possible. Didn’t say what it’s about.”

“Call him and ask if I can run by sometime after five. Buzz me when Mrs. Watkins gets here.” That really wouldn’t be necessary. Her whistling would be all that was needed.

“Will do,” Essie said. “Only one more day for the tent revival, Dr. G.”

“It’s been a busy week, Essie, but I’m going to try.”

“It’s going to be good tonight. I heard Reverend Love preaches right off the back of a big flatbed truck he drives right onto the stage, never missing a beat of the Lord’s word.”

“Uh-huh,” I said, fumbling to get my double doors unlocked.

I told myself I was trying to get away from Essie, not God.

My desk was becoming quite the repository for Mordecai Moore articles. Since I had a few minutes before my sessions began, I flipped through some of the material and spotted an interaction between District Attorney Sammy Dills and Moore.

“Son, are you sitting here with a straight face and a clean heart telling these God-fearing jurors that your confession was not a confession? That you disavow your statement to Sheriff Hurt and his deputies about ordering that sweet Yankee college girl who had her whole life ahead of her to either quiet down or you were, let me quote you now, you were ‘going to have to pull this here trigger’? Is that what you want these fine citizens to believe?”

“Yes, sir, that’s what I’m saying. That Lieutenant Goodson from New York City came into my cell with a piece of black rubber pipe and he hit me, hit me hard, so hard I wanted to die. That’s when I said what he wanted me to say.”

“Now, listen here, boy, these jurors have given up their precious time with family and job to judge what went on in the Battery Park Hotel that sad, sad night, and they don’t need to sit here and listen to bald-face lies. Did Dr. Daniel David not check you over and find no signs whatsoever of any beating? Is that not God’s truth? You tell these fine, upstanding citizens the truth, now.
