chapter 25

* * *

Summer's hairbrush wasn't where she'd left it. Neither was her powder. She finally found them both in the drawer second from the top, when she was quite sure she'd left them in the first. Other little things seemed out of place as well. It bothered her all morning, especially when she questioned Emile on it and he turned away from her, claiming ignorance even though there was guilt in his voice.

She tried to push it from her head and found it impossible. By noon, the thought that Emile had been going through her things consumed her. She needed to speak with someone outside of this house, someone who could tell her whether she was letting paranoia run away with her or if her thoughts and feelings were justified.

She announced she was going to Meadow's. Emile objected at first, but when he saw how resolute she was on the subject, he said he would at least go with her. She did not object at first, because she needed his help to get ready. Once ready, however, she told him the truth, or at least a version of it.

"I need some time alone with my sister. I need her guidance on certain... personal matters."

"Am I not enough guidance for you?" Emile asked, sounding hurt.

"The guidance I require is about you... about us." She blushed, and Emile's eyes darkened. He tilted her chin back and brushed his lips against hers. Whatever feelings of anger she'd been holding toward him fled as he kissed her. When her eyes opened, he was looking at her with a depth so powerful she could have drowned in it.

"I'll leave you at the house and return after an hour to see if you're ready to go."

"Don't. I might need more time than that. When I'm finished there, Meadow will walk me home."

She could see Emile struggling to accept her decision, but in the end, she must have won him over because he nodded and said no more on it. They left the house quickly, before he could change his mind.

Inside Meadow's house, Summer pulled the mustache from her lip and fell into the parlor chair. "I think Emile's going through my things," she declared.

Meadow's eyes widened. "What? Come and stay here."

Summer shook her head. "I can't. It's too risky for you."

"It's my risk to take."

"But it's not yours alone." She indicated Meadow's swollen belly. "You also have Booker, Lizzie, and Ida, and I'm not about to see any of them harmed."

Meadow bit her bottom lip, and Summer knew she had won the argument.

"Besides," Summer said, "if I'm right, then Emile is most likely doing so because Sidney has gotten into his head. That man is a walking contradiction. One minute, he seems to think me completely innocent of any crime; the next, I feel that he is watching my every move."

"He's worried for his brother. He sees how much Emile admires you and is afraid for him."

Summer let out a sigh. "I know you're right, and when all this is over, I shall very much enjoy rubbing Sidney's face in my innocence.
