The shooter has stretched her neck forward to make proper contact between her cheek and the comb.

This movement brings the barrels to alignment with the master eye without disrupting our visual focus or natural pointing ability. If a stock were designed to allow for the head to remain completely upright, the felt recoil would be quite unpleasant for most shooters. Instead the drop at comb is a compromise in design that minimizes felt recoil as well as head movement required to place the comb in the correct place beneath the cheekbone. Ideally the shooter’s head should remain upright and stretched slightly forward. A common mistake with new shooters is to tilt the head to the side. Tilting the head has an adverse effect on accuracy, as the rib is no longer lined up correctly with the master eye and the felt recoil in the cheek will be more palpable, making the shooting experience fairly unpleasant. As we’ve discussed, minor adjustments of the head should follow the X & Y axis, nodding the head “yes” up and down or shaking it “no” from side to side.
