In the Time

I’ve been at school,

Mama has pulled out the

tabletop Christmas tree,

decorated it with a string

of white lights.

Three gifts sit beneath the

tree:

one for me,

one for Zee,

one for Mama,

wrapped like Robin

paid good money to

make it perfect.

The double-taped ends mean

no peeking at the gift with the fancy

cursive writing and too-sweet perfume.

Mama’s always been light

on words, short on emotion,

and not a fan of most holidays.

Not Valentine’s Day,

not Veterans Day,

not even Mother’s Day,

and Christmas is always

hit-or-miss.

Sometimes no decorations

at all, but this year there’s

Robin and now the tabletop tree.
