The Hunter marched along the path he’d followed through that strange land but, even through those long hours, the sun never rose. The moon was full and high as he walked through the woods, bright enough to illuminate the path through the boughs but not shed and lights on the forests beyond. Hours passed and still the moon didn’t move.

Though the sky stayed the same, the Hunter grew more and more tired. His legs burned with every step and the weight of his rifle, body armor, and equipment threatened to pull him down. As the night wore on, the Hunter began to slow. His body armor, lightened a few magazines and grenades, weighed down on his shoulders. The rifle in his hands grew heavier and heavier and his pistol, in its holster on his hip, was a brick on his right leg. Even his boots were hard to lift, worn and well cared for as they were. Despite his best efforts, and years of training and experience, after what could have been days on the trail, the Hunter was tired.

Still he didn’t stop. Visions of that bloody, frantic escape from the woodsman at that nightmare mansion stayed fresh in his mind as he continued to walk and exhaustion threatened to destroy whatever space he’d put between himself and his pursuers.

There was no way to tell how long the Hunter had been on the march but the path he’d been told to follow had begun to rise as it ascended into hills. Mountains could be seen through the trees as they rose beyond the hills, their tops lost in clouds and glaciers. What could be seen of their peaks were bright in the full moonlight but, as the Hunter glanced up at them, he could feel something glance back.

Throughout his march, the Hunter had heard things in the woods around him. Things crawled and ran, jumped and flew through the darkness, and though none of them approached him, the eyes that glowed from under the trees proved their interest in the Hunter. He ignored them and focused his attention on the road ahead but, as he stopped to take his bearings once again, the Hunter glanced up at the mountains just in time to see something fly from it and begin a twisted route downward.

The Hunter watched as the thing from the mountain flapped its broad wings and let out a resigned sigh. He straightened then uttered a short prayer before he set out again but made it only a few dozen yards before a winged form flew overhead, low enough to shake the branches. A strong wind was raised as it passed and, though the Hunter shielded his eyes from the debris it kicked up, he saw the creature as it passed in front of the moon. It was large, with long, leathery wings and broad shoulders. He marched a few more yards before the thing flew past again, this time from behind, and landed on the path just ahead.

The form stood across the path and blocked the Hunter’s progress.
