Dinner is served by a silent Ethiopian woman with a bird tattooed on her forehead. Where are Claudia and Camilla and Lucia, and Maxim and Mauro, all the people who work for you? I shipped them off to their children and grandchildren for Christmas. The hospital sent an Ethiopian family to help me out. An entire family? How many are they? I didn’t count them, but the house is big enough, and they’re not fussy. Why did they come here on Christmas? Papà says the Ethiopians are also Christians. True, there are Ethiopian Christians, and Ethiopian Muslims, and even, believe it or not, Ethiopian Jews. I heard that Israel suddenly remembered them and brought them over, instead of European Jews who don’t want to move to Israel. But the Ethiopians who were sent to me are not Christians or Muslims or Jews, but Ethiopians who believe in spirits and stars, and their holidays are apparently at a different time of year. But how do you communicate with them? Do they speak Italian? It’s hard to understand them, just as it was hard for your father to understand the Tyrolean teacher. What can you do, everyone concocts his or her own Italian at will. But I don’t have to understand these Ethiopians, they need to understand me, and if even one of them guesses what I want, the whole family will understand and do as I ask.
