What do axolotls eat in the wild?

These animals come out to feed after sunset. They use their sense of smell and chemical receptors to find food. Because they have such small teeth, the axolotl cannot chew, so it cannot crush its prey but instead swallows it whole, after capturing it using a sucking motion. These amphibians are considered carnivores. In the wild, they feed on anything that moves and fits in their mouth.

In their natural environment, the diet of juvenile axolotls are omnivores, so their diet consists of organic matter, roots, seeds, plant leaves, algae, Daphnia and rotifers, in addition to small crustaceans such as amphipods and isopods, insects, leeches, snails, and small fish. Adult axolotls, however, are strict carnivores and feed primarily on worms, insects, crustaceans, molluscs and some small fish.
