. . . . .
It was just around sunrise when Skye brought us back, and I was more exhausted than I had ever been. Everything hurt, and my face was tomato red with wind scars. Before we left we did it more and more, and I was able to get to a point where I only needed a few long and fast steps before I could get off of the ground. Honestly, I felt free but even more than that I felt heroic, and I felt alive. Every time I was in the sky I thought more about the good I could do, or the new sense of purpose I now had. My mind was made up before we even went back to the house, but I waited until we were there to tell the doctor. He just gave me his typical friendly expression, and pointed me up toward my room.
Sure enough, sitting right on the desk, there was a name plaque. It read: Eric Lindy, Moon-Glider.
âHe made it before you even came to the house,â Skye said as she strolled in behind me. âHe always knows the answer before you give it.â
âI feelâ¦â I paused, searching for words to describe it. âGood? I feel good. Thatâs a big feeling for me, Skye, because I spend most of my time feeling just... empty. So fucking empty. This is the right choice, isnât it?â
She sat on the bed, and it made an old creak as she did from the mattress or even the frame itself. She smirked at me, and I put the nameplate down and sat beside her. Shockingly, she took my hand in her own and gave it a gentle squeeze. It stung the wind scar on my hands, but I did not mind too much. In fact, I think I enjoyed it. We looked at each other, and even though I looked like a tired mess she still regarded me with a soft stare that was rare on her normally tight, serious face.
âThat is up to you,â she returned. âWhen I first came it was just the doctor, and Reggie, and⦠well someone else. They found me using my shadows to steal, just to get by and stay hidden from the world. To this day I donât know how they found me, but they did. I trained, just as you did, and when they offered me a room I hesitated too. How could I trust them?â She chuckled quietly, âI mean I was young, alone, and angry, but the doctor was so sweet and Reggie seemed so trustworthy. So, I stayed. And even though sometimes Iâm still angry, or sometimes I am sad, I have never regretted it.â
The someone else line threw me off, but I decided not to push it. If she didnât want to share it now then I shouldnât push, especially after she has already told me so much. I did make a mental note of it however, because now curiosity tugged at me.
I smiled and realized my lips hurt as well.
