CHAPTER 16
ALEX
âDonât make a fucking move,â said the man. âYou think I wonât shoot a sexy little bitch like her? She wouldnât be the first.â
Alex froze in place. Part of him was worried that some vampire had tracked them down and gotten the jump on them. But as he sniffed the air, he recognized a scent that wasnât anything like any vampire heâd been around had. It was human â strange to him that he was now able to sniff out humans like they were some other species, but he didnât dwell on the topic. No time for that.
âWhat do you want me to do?â he asked.
âGood,â said the man. âGood fucking question. Smart question. Raise your hands in the air and keep them where I can see them. Thatâd be a good fucking start.â
Alex did as he asked. He knew he shouldâve felt fear at that moment, but he didnât. All he felt was rage that this asshole was threatening Siennaâs life, the gun jammed into her back. Sure, heâd seen her shake off injury before, but there was no guarantee that her powers would be enough to survive a gunshot right through the heart.
He couldnât risk it â he knew he had to play it smart. Sure, he had super speed and strength, but his powers were hardly under his control. One slip-up and Sienna could wind up dead.
âOkay,â said Alex. âJust donât hurt her.â
âThere we go,â said the man. âJust play it smart and both of you might walk out of this. Okay, first thing I want is both of your wallets. Reach for them nice and slow.â
âDoing it now,â said Alex.
Slowly, deliberately, he reached back for his wallet, slipping it out of his back pocket. His eyes fixed forward, he reached back with the wallet and seconds later felt the crook snatch it out of his hand. He wasnât worried about the wallet in the least. Nothing in there but a few bucks and whatever remnants he had left of his old life.
âNow the girl,â he said.
âI...I donât have anything,â she said, her voice shaking with fear.
âWhat?â he asked. âYou donât have a fucking purse or a phone?â
âNothing!â she said.
Alex didnât like this â he knew things were on the verge of taking a turn for the bad. The very bad. Heâd been in scrapes like this before, sure, but this one was different.
This one involved Sienna.
âWhat the fuck kind of girl goes out and doesnât have a fucking thing valuable on her!â the mugger shouted. âYouâre fucking lying to me, I know it!â
âCome on, man,â said Alex. âNo need to lose our shit, okay?â
The mugger didnât respond with words. Instead, Alex felt the sharp crack of the butt of the gun against the back of his head. He staggered forward, the blow landing hard.
âNot a fucking word out of you, got it!â
Alex glanced back at the crook for long enough to see that he looked about how he expected â scrawny, dirty, and wild-eyed. Some lowlife looking for enough cash to get his next fix of whatever he happened to be addicted to.
