Chapter 5.

CADEN

Life was so good. Every day, or at least for the past three weeks, I woke up to a hot man, hot sex, and a hot meal. It was a heaven I hadn’t dared to dream of.

“Caden, how are you today?” Tenille, Max’s mother, asked me as I ate my lunch with her. Lunch, such a novel concept to eat more than once a day.

“Wonderful, thank you. This food is amazing.” We had fresh fruit and vegetables from the garden, and there was always meat from the hunting parties. “I can’t believe we have so much meat all the time.”

Tenille laughed. “Well, my husband, and Max after him, have done a good job at working out sustainable ways for us to live. If we didn’t have to deal with those vampires, we would live carefree.”

My mood dropped instantly. “I don’t know much about vampires. We never had to deal with them much at our pack, which is strange.”

Tenille looked away as though bashful. “Well, ah, vampires do prefer clean and healthy sources to feed from. Being well fed, our blood seems to attract them more.”

A chortle burst from my throat. “That’s funny. My old pack was actually safer because of how unhealthy we were. Ha!” I continued to laugh and consumed the food in front of me. Max loved to feed me, and when he went out, he put his mother in charge of me, saying I needed to be fattened up.

I didn’t disagree with him. The difference between my body and his was so marked that I looked like a skeleton compared to his muscular, godly body. I was determined to change that for him and be the Alpha Mate that he said he wanted in me.

Not that he had mated with me yet, but he would soon. I was sure.

“That’s probably true...in some ways,” Tenille said as she smiled at me. So warm, and kind. Much like my own mother had been.

I finished my food and cleaned away the dishes like they showed us how to.

“Can I do anything for you. Tenille?”

“Well, you can go and harvest some more herbs for me.” She handed me a basket. “The garden is at the back of the units to the left. Just pick a little bit of everything if you can.”

“Of course.”

I wanted to be helpful, as much as possible. That was the deal with Max that I had. I left the house with the basket in my arms and let the smile that had been hanging around for days, stretch across my face.

Part of me remained terrified that this was some sort of strange dream that I had yet to wake up from. But the other half was so happy, I just couldn’t seem to stop myself from luxuriating in the time I had.

The garden was small and well kept, I stopped and stared for a moment, soaking it all in. In this world with no humanity, and very few beings left on the planet, I couldn’t believe that such a little Eden still existed.
