I awake with a slight headache. My cheek and body lay touching a stone-cold floor and my left arm has gone numb as though Iâd been lying on it for a long time. How long had I been out?
I sit up and suddenly realize my body is fine. Maybe even better than before. I look over my hands, arms, and the rest of my extremities, lastly feeling my neck and face which are both completely intact.
âHow could this be?â I murmur aloud. I take note of the ring, my gaze lingering on it. It seems Aldous had given me a marvellous gift after all. I think to look around at my surroundings and realize I am not in the foyer of the Doh where I had expected to land. I am concealed by darkness within a tiny corridor. How did I get here?
I donât know where thus passage leads from, for in one direction it is totally dark. However, a few feet the other way, the passage opens up onto a large well-lit hall. From my vantage point, the hall looks incredibly grand, and I stand up to get a better look. My shoulder knocked something that was hanging on the wall. It rattled loudly enough that I felt for it to still its noise, before walking to where the light just fell into the passage. There was no one moving within the part of the hall I could see. I risked a peek either way.
The hallway looked to be three or more times as wide as the classroom Iâd been in and had a red velvet carpet lying along the centre of it, extending in each direction. Dark wooden walls, reached up high, towering over me. The trees whose lives had been taken to make them must have been majestic, and probably hundreds of years old. The light came from large glowing white globes, mounted on the wall at intervals. They were not as bright as sunlight, although that was starting to come in through the long slabs or glass in the high ceiling that alternated with sections of dark wood.
I ventured out further, and the globe nearest me brightened, sensing my movement. The light coming in from above reminded me of dawn, and I wondered if the globes were dim when the sun was fully bright. That was only a minor mystery. I really wanted to know where this place was, and where all the doors and other wider passages led to. Some of the doors were of ornately designed wood, like I had seen in other places in the Doh, others looked to be made of steel â all were much wider than the passage I was in.
How busy this area became, during the day, I had no way of knowing. Now though, I felt watched, but the only sign of life, if you could call it that, were the large old paintings like the one on the wall beside me. It showed legendary zodiacs caught in a moment of war stricken time.
