Days later I am called to stand and guard, with my soldiers flanked out to the left and right, to protect the Elder magicians who huddle around the cemetery and stare morbidly at the tombstone marking the grave of the vampire lord. They join hands and chant in a low, strange, hollow voice, making grunting and guttural sounds that somehow desecrate the sacred beauty of the marble pillars of the City temples which surround us. Dark and wicked lights coalesce from out of the air and dance with vicious glee, storm clouds gather overhead… and with a crack of thunder a long, withered, decayed arm shoots out from the ground. Janite runs over and helps Necromal to climb up from the grave. The vampire lord looks just as the same as he did in our last duel, wrapped in a cloak of black smoke, his skin snow-white except for his blood-stained lips, his eyes glowing red with the lust for murder and domination. The magicians then cast another spell, which infuses the air with Elder blood and soaks Necromal. The vampire lord’s skin takes on a strange color, pink and purple but also with the gray of death. He is now Fire-Pyro Necromal.

“I am restored,” the vampire lord declares. He looks at me and smiles. I see that the sharpness of his fangs is much as I recalled.

Fire-Pyro Necromal changes into a giant bat and flies out to do battle with the swarm of diamond dragonflies. Using his strength and powers, which are far greater than those of any living Elder, he fights the diamond dragonflies and rips them apart, piece by piece, until the Field of Summer shines like a sea of crushed glass. Then he returns to the City.

“You are one of us,” Franite tells Fire-Pyro Necromal when the vampire lord comes back. “You saved us from disaster and crisis. We would have been destroyed if not for your help. Every honor, every accolade is rightfully yours. You have our thanks.”

“I have your thanks now,” he says, smiling. “But soon I will have your blood as well.”

Franite’s eyes widen in shock. “But, Janite, you said….”

“I said that Necromal would come back,” Janite replies. “You wanted to believe that the Necromal of the future would be different from the Necromal of the past. Fire-Pyro Necromal is not Arch-Venom Necromal, but a vampire is a vampire, and Elder blood does not an Elder make. You knew the risks; you remembered the Vampire War. You wanted to listen with your hearts and not your ears—now hear the sweet music of doom. Now scream in fear as Necromal drinks your blood.”

“But you will be destroyed too!” Franite cries, as zombies materialize everywhere in the City from puffs of blood-red smoke and start clubbing Elders in the head and killing them. Franite screams in fear and runs away, but two zombies grab her and drag her down.

“Small price to pay for revenge upon Darite,” Janite says.

“Yes, I concur,” Necromal says in his silk-soft voice.
