Roy worked in the warehouse, which was managed by none other than Darryl Philbin, played by Craig Robinson. As the series continued, Darryl became the assistant regional manager, moving into the bullpen upstairs and becoming a much greater presence on the show.

As a cast, we were thrilled to see more of his character, because Craig was so much fun on set. There was always a chance that he and Kate would burst into an improvised song. I remember in the Halloween episode of Season 8 (“Spooked”), we had been doing a conference room scene for most of the day and were all starting to get loopy. In between takes, Craig started to make up a song about the fog machine we were using, and Ellie, Ed, and Kate all joined in. It was nonsensical, but conference room scenes did that to us—being trapped in that room for long periods just inspired silliness. I have video of that day, and it never fails to make me smile. The song they improvised went something like this:

“We got the fog machine, and you know

We lookin’ really mean

In our costumes that’s for Halloween

We got the candy and the tricker-treaters for the scene.”

It went on for a while and only stopped when our assistant director told us it was time to start shooting again. And if there was a keyboard around, forget it. Craig would put on a full concert!

Literally everything Craig did on set made me laugh, especially the scenes when Darryl confronts Michael. Darryl was the only one in the office that could flat-out say no to Michael Scott. I remember the scene in “Back from Vacation” (Season 3) when Michael accidentally emails Darryl a photo of a topless Jan from his vacation. When he realizes what he’s done, Michael runs down to the warehouse, only to find Darryl eating a full plate of food with his feet up on the desk. Michael begs Darryl to delete the photo, but Darryl just says, “I’m kinda busy here, Michael.” It’s an amazing moment. The plate of food was not in the script. Craig grabbed a plate from our snack table to give an added button to the scene. It was perfect comedy. I also loved how in later seasons we got to meet Darryl’s daughter, and that after a few torturous years with Kelly he found love with Val and moved to Philadelphia to start a new business with Jim. Those story lines showed off the softer side of Darryl and were perfectly suited to the big-hearted man that is Craig Robinson. But my favorite memories of Craig are of our on-set sing-alongs. They were joyous, just like Angela described.

We can’t close out this chapter without talking about a total sweetheart—Mr. Ed Helms. No one else could play the role of Andy Bernard, prep-school WASP and a cappella–singing salesman with anger management issues, more perfectly than Ed. I think he made me laugh harder than anyone else on set, and that is saying a lot.
