Chapter 14

Nicolas found himself back in the ship’s mess, which was appropriate as he was a bloody mess himself. Being attacked by bird-women creatures had worked up an appetite, plus he needed to sit a while so his body could heal and restore his blood supply. He was still slightly lightheaded, but at least he was properly aware again. Right now, he was just happy to be alive, riding the wave of euphoria he was starting to notice after surviving a fight, once the adrenaline had calmed down and he’d had time to process what had happened. He’d made it through another one, albeit barely.

Garaz had tended to his wounds, sealing and healing them before giving him a herb for the pain, which was very effective. There was a lingering ache, but considering how bad it could’ve been, he put it aside. His only niggle was his ruined shirt, caked in his now-drying blood. He’d complained to Garaz after the orc healed his wounds.

‘I am a healer. Take up laundry matters with a laundress,’ the orc had snapped before moving on to the next patient. Nicolas had forgotten how much using magic could drain the orc. Probably not the right time to bemoan his attire.

Opening the holes in his shirt, Nicolas looked at one of the still-red talon wounds in his shoulder. Hopefully, they wouldn’t scar. His mother would have a fit if he came home sporting a multitude of scars.

My parents.

He wanted to be guilty about his lack of drive to return home, but he couldn’t. They still had work to do here. When it was done, he would earn the right to go home. Until then…he just couldn’t dwell on it.

—Mind you, there are no harpies at home. And good food, and my bed, and…

‘That was intense.’ Shift slumped down on the bench across from him, looking exhausted and perfectly interrupting his train of thought. ‘I could quite happily never see a harpy again.’

‘Mmm-hmm,’ he replied absentmindedly with a nod.

His companion looked at him strangely for a second. ‘Stop it,’ they chided him finally.

‘Stop what?’

‘You’re thinking of how much better being home would be. Don’t try to deny it. You might as well be screaming it with that hangdog expression and drooping shoulders.’

He sat upright with some fidgeting. ‘I don’t like how well you can read me.’ He huffed.

Shift let out a single laugh. ‘Like it’s hard.’

He suppressed the smile, just not quickly enough.

‘What are we talking about?’ Auron asked as he appeared beside Nicolas, making him jump.

‘About how easy Nicolas is to read,’ Shift answered.

‘Oh that.’ The spirit nodded. ‘Yeah, you aren’t subtle, kid. You scare easily too. Don’t think I didn’t notice the flinch when I appeared.’

‘Well, I’m sorry I’m not all guarded like Silva.’

‘You’re definitely her complete opposite.’ Shift sniggered.

‘I don’t know.’ Now, Auron’s voice was cool. ‘You both seem overly fond of Ramirez. Actually, let me correct myself. You seem overly fond of him when he’s showing you how to prance around with a sword.
