The Confrontation

A pair of ostentatious mahogany doors slammed against the wall as Lila stalked in to Nathan’s office, expression furious. Nathan glanced up at the noise, eyes widened in surprise and face showing the beginnings of a mounting fury. For now, though, he simply appeared astounded at the raw nerve of her. There was a man sitting across from him, eyes jumping between the two before settling intentionally on a particularly interesting bit of floor.

“Can I help you, dear?” Nathan asked, jaw tight and smile strained. Lila was speechless now, mind only now realizing what on earth she had just done. It was late, so this meeting, whatever it was about, must be important. Was she insane? Why on earth had she thought about storming into Nathan’s office to what—demand answers?—was in any way a good idea?

The initial anger drained out of her in that moment of shocked regret and doubt soon filled the space the anger had consumed. She was here, in his personal space, after a night filled with such wonderful moments, embarrassing him in front of someone important. Why couldn’t she have just been happy with those pleasant memories? Why did she have to move outside of her place? Where did she get the gall to expect more? She should go back to her room. She should smile at him, apologize, and say she didn’t know he had company and return to her room. Maybe she could play this off as just wanting to be near him, as being in the middle of doing something that implied she was on his side. This was fixable, she could still solve this, everything would be fine. And then Vanessa’s smarmy face swam in front of her, the memory hitting her chest like a weighed stone, and the furious righteous anger slammed down her doubt and nervousness once again. He was going to have to kill her or be honest with her; she decided. She couldn’t take the pounding in her chest for much longer.

Nathan had been clear about the nature of their “relationship”, sure, but things had changed. The first time she’d learned about Vanessa, she felt nothing stronger than slight embarrassment and even that had been easily pushed behind a general wall of confused terror that was her initial confinement. Something had changed. Maybe it was that moment of peace a few days ago and the nights of enjoyable dinners before that. But hadn’t he agreed that she was going to start sliding more towards wife than captive? Hadn’t she done everything he wanted? She was playing the part of his wife now, not just that of the tortured daughter. It wasn’t unreasonable for her to expect something, anything, back from him. Tears pricked her eyes as she thought about it.

She wasn’t even asking him not to see Vanessa, she just didn’t want to be lied to about it. With everything she was doing, with the constant double thinking she was forcing her mind through, with the backflips
