Chapter Eighteen

Maksim

“Don’t kill the delivery person. I have a couple items arriving for Laura while we go for a walk.”

Niko volunteered to stay behind and keep an eye on the villa. Aleks, Anton, and I are all wearing earpieces and have two-way radios. They’re far faster than dialing cell phones. Niko will see the more appropriate swimwear before Laura, which dulls some of the excitement of surprising her, but none of us would allow a package into the house or near Laura without checking it first. The store agreed to take a photo of the delivery person and send it to Niko and me. If anyone else shows up, they will find themselves either running or with a bullet in their head.

Laura emerges from our room in a little sundress she hasn’t worn with me before. I stopped at her apartment before picking her up from work. I packed a variety of clothes, some casual and some dressier. I still want to surprise her with the dress I ordered, but now I wonder if I should wait. I’m not convinced I can take her away from the villa. I don’t want to give her a shiny toy, then tell her she can’t play with it. It would be an asshole move.

She heads to the kitchen and fills the blender with ice before going to the bar and gathering a bottle of rum and simple syrup. She combines them with fruit and sugar. I know she prefers sweeter wines and cocktails. This might give me a cavity. But I watch her pour, and she’s liberal with the amount of rum she adds. We soon each have a glass of strawberry and banana daiquiri. There’s a soft breeze that lifts the wisps of hair from her neck that escaped her messy bun. She’s not wearing any makeup, and I think she’s never looked more beautiful.

I slip her hand into mine as Aleks takes off ahead of us, and Anton trails behind. They give us enough space that we can talk quietly but not so far that they can’t protect Laura. I slipped a shirt on while she got changed. I don’t think she’s noticed yet that I have a gun tucked against my back.

“Thank you for bringing me here, Maks. This is so lavish. I never imagined coming to the Caribbean and staying in a private villa with a private chef. I know this isn’t quite what you planned, but this is beyond anything I’ve dreamed of.”

“You’re welcome, Laura. I’m glad I’m able to do this for you. Despite everything, you seem more relaxed here.”

“I am. I would live along the water in a heartbeat. I like mountains and forests, but the water is my happy place. It always has been.”

“Did you and your family vacation much?”

“Yes. We traveled a lot when Maddie and I were kids. We went all over the Med and Caribbean, but I’ve never been to Turks and Caicos before. My parents aren’t into cold weather, so I’ve never learned to ski.
