Chapter 20

The Unopened Gift

Juniper and Levi lay on their backs in the grass, their heads close together, looking up at the trees. She could feel the presence of Levi’s hand inches from hers. The sky was pure, endless blue and the light resting on the world was fall-golden. Juniper loved to watch the colored leaves shimmer in the breeze and break away, twirling down toward her and landing with a soft tap on the ground.

“I’m starting to think Bo might never come,” she said.

“You don’t think those guys...”

Bo had saved them. He did something to those spirits. He scattered them. It didn’t make much sense but that was the only way she could think to put it. Could they have done something bad to him? She didn’t know how a battle worked without bodies. Bo seemed to know a thing or two about it, though.

“Maybe it takes a while to get your strength back after something like that.”

“Hmm,” Levi said, as if considering it.

“It all feels like a big guessing game, doesn’t it? Lila and Grandma are off with the Society ladies now, trying to figure out why Betsy Barker suddenly has the ability to move things with her mind.”

“That is crazy,” Levi said. “I really wish you’d brought me with you to that bingo game.”

“Sorry. You totally missed out.”

“If I were her, I’d be headed to Vegas right now.”

“I think there are more important things that require her attention.”

“I know. Just joking,” he said.

“Uh huh.”

“Kind-of.”

Juniper blew out a puff of air. “It bothers me that we’re just sitting here doing nothing.”

Levi turned his head, and she looked over, realizing with a twist of her stomach how close they were.

“I’m kinda liking it.” He smiled.

Her mouth quirked in frustration as she tried to return it. She hadn’t meant it that way, but he knew that. He was laying one of his charm traps.

“I like doing nothing with you,” Levi said. “And I like being outside. It makes me feel, I don’t know, calm. Like all the way myself. It’s hard to explain.”

She nodded. “I get it. Kind of like when I work the lost and found. It fills up a reserve inside or something.”

“Exactly.”

“Anyway, I just meant—I want to be helping in some way.” She’d had to take out her hair elastic to lay down on her back, and her hair was splayed out everywhere. She swiped at a strand that had blown into her face.

“What more can we do?” Levi asked. “Bo told us not to go back and I’m okay with that. Those guys wanted to kill us.”

“I know. Maybe we need to do our own research about how to get rid of them. Or we could go talk to Opal again.”

“Bring back her box empty? Tell her we stole it and lost whatever valuable town-saving antique was inside?”

“You stole it. She might at least know what it was for. Besides, it’s the right thing to do.”

He sighed. “I know it is. That’s one of the things I like about you, Junie.
