TOOL 30 Let’s Make a Deal

If you want your partner to do something but don’t want to sound like you’re complaining or criticizing, offer to make a deal. Let’s say you’re sick and tired of doing all the cooking and cleaning. Instead of making a fuss about it, think of a trade that you can offer for your partner’s help. Then wait for a relaxed opportunity to tell your partner that you want to make a deal. For example, say, “Honey, I’ll do all the grocery shopping (even if you already do) and rub your shoulders after dinner if you’ll help cook or take care of all cleanup.” Make an offer so exciting, fun, or pleasurable that your partner can’t refuse. You’ll not only accomplish your goal, but you’ll do it without argument.
