Chapter Nine

Adrian was exhausted.

After driving all night at ridiculous speeds and getting them settled in the safehouse in Colorado with a warding in place, he wanted to collapse. He was ever thankful for Ameria.

A damn toddler, saving the day.

Because she had. Somehow the princess had used magic to put Demi to sleep and slow the poison’s crawl. Amazing and exactly why elves were so dangerous from the get-go. Adrian had heard the stories of vampires feeding on elves only to get drugged by the blood. Dependent on it the same way humans that fed on them grew addicted.

Demi had never had an issue with becoming hooked on his blood. They weren’t sure why, but they’d determined her resistance might have to do with her demon physiology, which was the only reason he considered the next steps.

Adrian stood in the kitchen and filled a glass with water. Technically someone could say he was taking advantage of the situation, but the only way to save Demi was by removing the poison. He wasn’t a magic worker and doubted Ameria had the power. If she did, she didn’t know how to use it.

He moved into the bedroom and checked on Ameria, who was passed out in a makeshift crib in the walk-in closet. Then he looked back to see Demi thrashing back and forth on the full-size bed. Her movements were weak and halfhearted but still enough to show her discomfort.

It wasn’t easy to get her sitting up, but once she did, he spoke softly. “Demi, open your eyes and take a drink of this water.”

She struggled against him and then cracked an eyelid. “I’m not thirsty.”

“Yes, you are. This will help a bit.”

He had to finagle the glass to her lips, and she barely swallowed a few drops before she let the rest dribble down her neck to soak her shirt. He didn’t miss the way her nipples pebbled against his chest at the change in temperature.

Unfortunately, she was still burning up.

He cast a glance at the sleeping princess before hefting Demi back into his arms. Whatever happened next, they needed to not be in the room with the small child. He strode out into the living room. This house wasn’t nearly as nice as the previous one, the couch an old futon with a flat mattress cushion. He kept Demi in his arms as he set the glass of water on the stained wooden coffee table and sat down, the futon creaking under their combined weight.

Demi groaned and opened her eyes again. “What. Is. The plan?”

“I need to tell you something.”

She reached up and cupped his cheek, the caress and her half-open gaze doing things to his insides. He hated having to lie to her, hiding the truth from her. No matter what happened next, he had to confess everything. This could rip them apart.

He’d planned on coming clean as soon as she rescued him from the bar. Legion and the Anguis Noir ruined his shot. If he fed from her and exchanged blood, she’d become aware of his hidden emotions.
