Sitting in the middle of Cainâs bed later that day, Wynter watched him pace back and forth. He made quite a picture, fluid and predatory, his muscles bunching and rippling beneath his shirt. Her stomach would have gotten all fluttery for sure if he wasnât also seriously pissed. âYou promised you wouldnât overreact,â she reminded him.
He spared her a quick look. âAnd I havenât,â he clipped.
âYou just said youâre going to rip out her spinal cord and wrap it around her neck.â
He gave a stiff shrug. âShe deserves worse.â
Wynter would have preferred not to have told him about the visit Ishtar paid her. He had enough things on his mind right now, and she didnât want the bitch to take up space in his head. But he would have found out from someone else, just as heâd found out about the womanâs first visit months ago. Then heâd have been upset that he hadnât heard of it directly from Wynter. Plus, there were enough secrets between them as it was.
Moreover, it was only sensible to alert Cain. After all, there was a chance that Ishtar would sneakily deliver Wynter into the Aeonsâ hands herself. If Wynter did mysteriously disappear, Cain would know exactly who to question.
âNot gonna lie,â Wynter began, âyou make my hormones weak when you turn growly and snarly like this. But sheâs not worth the energy youâre putting into all that pacing. And sheâs far from worth the kind of reaction youâre considering giving her.â
âI will not show her mercy,â he said, his voice as dark as those eyes that glittered at her. âShe tried to make you give yourself up, knowing you would eventually die if you did.â
âBut to her, this wasnât a big deal. You know how her mind works. The way Ishtar sees it, Iâm a mere mortal, as common as an ant. And just as a mage might sacrifice animals without much of a thought, sheâd easily urge me to sacrifice myself because in the grand scheme of things I simply donât matter.â
A low growl slipped out of him. âYou matter to me. You matter a fuck of a lot to me. She knows that. She ignored it. And she needs to answer for it.â
âBut what I said before still appliesâyou canât afford to lose any Ancients when you might soon be coming up against the Aeons again. And it wouldnât only be Ishtar youâd be without. Inanna wouldnât exactly take her sisterâs death well. Sheâd probably seek to avenge her. Youâd kill Inanna, of course. But then youâd be two Ancients down.â
He stopped pacing, his teeth grinding. âI canâtâI wonâtâlet what Ishtar did slide.â
âIâm not asking you to. Iâm simply asking you not to kill her.â Wynter would rather do that herself, though of course not yet.
âShe knew what she was risking.â
âBut my point still applies.â
Cain cursed. âIt never even occurred to me that she would make such an illogical move,â he said, crossing to the bed. âShe couldnât have honestly thought that you would agree to surrender yourself to the Aeons.
