Chapter Twenty-Seven

I wake when the sun is but a whisper of light on the horizon. I’m tempted to roll over and catch another hour of sleep, but my mind is already wide awake. Somewhat reluctantly, I get out of bed and throw open my wardrobe. As I spend a few minutes sifting through the dresses, I can’t help but think about how much Mara would love them. Guilt washes over me when I realize I haven’t written her at all. I know if she were in my shoes, I would have gotten at least a dozen letters from her. I choose a simple pale green dress before sitting down at my desk to write Mara a letter.

I start writing, all the details spilling out. I’m hesitant to put down specifics about magic in case my letter is intercepted, but I speak as candidly as I can while giving Mara as much information as possible. I fill her in on my engagement to Bram, Kato’s promotion to Ehren’s Guard, and even a little about Alak. By the time I’m done, I’ve filled almost three full pages. With a smile of satisfaction, I dig through the desk looking for a seal of some sort, but I can’t find one. I suspect that I could easily ring for Kara or another servant to assist me, but I decide to check with Alak first on the off chance he procured what I need when he wrote his letters last night.

The sitting room is dark and empty as I stroll through to Alak’s door. I knock softly. There’s no response. Assuming he’s sleeping, I turn away, deciding I’ll just sort through some more texts until he wakes up. I’ve only taken a few steps when his door creaks open behind me.

“Astra?” Alak’s groggy voice calls out.

I turn around. Alak leans against his doorpost, wearing nothing but his linen pants, his hair sticking up everywhere. I’m not sure if it’s a trick of the morning light, but Alak’s scars look slightly more pronounced than usual. I wonder if he’s been using his illusion magic to dim these scars as well.

“Sorry if I woke you. I was just wondering if you had a seal or anything to send a letter,” I say, meeting his eyes.

“Are you sure you didn’t just want to see me fresh out of bed, love?” Alak grins. “Because you don’t have to make an excuse for that. You’re welcome in my room any time, day or night.”

I roll my eyes, ignoring the way my heart picks up a little speed at his words. “Do you have the supplies or not?”

“I do,” he says, beckoning me into his room.

Inside his room, I find Felixe snuggled down in the blankets on Alak’s unmade bed. He raises his head and greets me with a little yip before curling back up and closing his eyes. I sit down on the bed next to him, scratching him between his ears as Alak closes the door.

“Sorry if I woke you up, too,” I whisper.
