Chapter 13

“Hello, young one. What can I get you today?” Before Nadia could answer, Elmer walked through the entryway.

“Elmer! What are you doing here?”

“Take it easy, Sel. I’m just here to shop for my little friend here.”

“Yeah, you got my money?”

“Dang, Sel, I got your money.”

She stood with her hands on her hips and looked over her small round frames. “I have heard that before. Show me?”

Elmer produced a wad of something foreign to Nadia.

“Wait, Elm, why do you have a child with you?” She looked at Nadia, “Sorry, I mean a young lady.”

“I’m on an errand for Ahnah,” he replied.

“Oh, my.” She announced, “You are Inneq, huh? I’m Selma, but folks around here call me Mama, Mama Murray.”

“Nice to meet you, ma’am.”

“Oh goodness.” Selma shook her head and smiled, “You may be the most polite child I’ve met in a while.”

“Thank you, ma’am.”

Selma placed her hand on her chin, “What in the world are you wearing, dear?”

“That’s why we made the pit stop, Sel.” Elmer ruffled Nadia’s hair.

Selma frowned at Elmer, “Go get this child a big bowl from Betty, and I’ll fix her up while you’re gone.”

“Wait, we are . . .” Elmer tried to finish, but Selma moved across the tent and shooed him away.

“Now that he’s gone, we can have some girl talk.” She turned and looked at Nadia, “Where do you normally get your clothes, Hon?”

Nadia looked down and began to feel self-conscious for the first time, “I, well . . .”

Selma used a piece of fabric to cover the entrance to her store, “Don’t be ashamed, I can see you have a very unique sensibility. I’m only asking because people will spot a foreigner around here. Let’s just say that’s not a good thing.”

Nadia paused momentarily, “Well, Gramps lets me buy anything I want from the second-hand store.”

“I see you like patterns,” Selma said as she turned to a rack and began sifting through items. She grabbed a couple of sweaters and threw them over her shoulder. She rushed around pulling and sorting various colors. Finally, she lugged a pair of boots that glistened from under a table. She held them up so Nadia could take a look. “These just came in.” She said, “I wasn’t sure what to do with them because they are so small and mainly women shop in here, but I think these were made for you.”

Nadia blushed and stared at the boots. The silver glitter sparkled as she turned them in the light. She wasn’t sure what to say, “I . . . those are new. . . I could never . . .”

Selma smiled wide, “Yes, you could. Anything for the girl who is going to save us all.” She snatched a few pairs of colored socks, but Nadia stood stunned. She held the boots in her hands and trembled a little.

“I’ve never had new clothes before. I can’t pay you for these.” She dropped her head and set the boots on the floor.

Selma briskly walked over to her, “Hey, look at me.
