Running Blind
One
She tried to sit up, fell back.
âI wouldnât if I were you. Youâre in pretty horrible shape.â The Crimboneâs voice was a deep gravel rasp.
Sallyâs head fell to the side, vision rolling around the motel room. She guessed sheâd expected to die on Main Street, but she frankly hadnât had enough energy left to be too scared. She sure was now, though. Her head was bandaged, along with a few injuries she hadnât noticed before. Lights dimmed and rose like someone was playing with a dial-knob lamp, and everything had a weird purplish tint. From the bedâs edge, the Crimbone regarded her curiously. His tiny pale eyes werenât cruel, if anything thoughtful, but they definitely let you know not to fuck with him. The narrow face and pointed nose seemed unnervingly out of place, atop possibly the thickest, hardest shoulders and chest sheâd ever seen. What such a sharp, assessing brain could do with all that brute strength and raw ferocity, she didnât want to know. He was bald except for his gray goatee, and a web of scars braided half his tree-trunk neck.
âWhy are you doing this?â
âWhat, saving your ass?â
âYeah, pretty much.â
âFor starters, you arenât a threat, and I donât think youâre with the people who are.â
âI donât want to be with themâ¦I hope you kill them all.â Those words tasted harsh. Hours ago, she couldnât have been more certain of anything.
âThat why you asked to bargain for your life?â
âI tried that?â
âYeah. Did you think to lead me to them?â
âProbably. I canât remember saying that.â
âCan you still lead me to them?â
âI mightâ¦Canât think straight right nowâ¦Ask me later.â
âWho are they?â
âMy family.â
Had he just winced? âBut you are a Spirelight.â
That wouldnât be a question, but she answered, âI donât know.â
âAre your parents Spirelights?â
âYeah.â
âThatâd make you one, then, wouldnât it now? It doesnât automatically mean Iâll kill you. About that, though, youâre lucky you ran into this particular Crimbone.â
âAm I?â
He rolled his eyes. âNo, I donât plan to rape or torture you, either.â
âYouâre looking for Rob?â
âIf you mean Rob Coscan, then yeah.â
âWhy?â
âHeâs a Crimbone fledgling whoâs just made his First Call. Reportedly heâs already close to his Second Call. I have reason to think heâs about to land himself deep in a world of shit in the process.â
Rob, a Crimboneâ¦Rob, in deep shitâ¦Sally let out a muted sob, not sure which notion was worse. She almost spoke, but she drifted in and out.
âYou there?â asked the Crimbone.
âWhereâs Rob?â
âI hoped youâd know. Whatâs your story with him?â
She shut her eyes again and made another soft sound.
âOkay, then. Well, gotta hand it to you, I didnât see that one coming. Whatâs your name?â
âSallyâ¦Sally Wildfireâ¦â
âWildfire? As in Syless and Ella Wildfireâs daughter?â
Her eyes snapped wide. âHowâd you know?â
âI like to keep up with whoâs who on both sides. Donât blame you for wanting âem dead.â
Her eyes closed again. âYeah, well, youâre Crimbone.â
âI was taking that into account. If half of what Iâve heard is true, I still donât blame you. Sally, my nameâs Jesse.
