George Carver waited for his weekly call from Nolan, but it never came. It was the first time in months that the call had just not happened.
Carver checked his sources, but there was no news of Nolanâs arrest or death, and those were the only two acceptable reasons for Nolan to not have called him. Finally, he slipped the guard a note, and the man grunted and took him to the wall of phones.
Carver dialed, and the phone rang until the operator came on and told him that since no one was answering and heâd tried the number three times, Carver needed to go back to his cell.
The guard took him back to his eight foot by eight foot home and as the bolt clanged home, Carver turned and began punching his mattress.
It was the best he could do to vent the frustration without hurting himself or getting himself in trouble.
It didnât help.
Miles away, Nolan saw the number come up on his phone, and shut off the device. He didnât want to talk to Carver. He didnât need to listen to the man whine and complain, and he certainly didnât want to hear about how Nolan wouldnât be as successful if not for the General.
Even if it was partly true.
Carver and Nolan had met at a function held, ironically, in Leavenworth, Kansas. A group of soldiers had come home successful from some mission or another and Carver was there to pin medals on a few of them. Nolan had been invited because heâd been a contributor to the development of the new weapons they had used. It was all coincidental that theyâd met at all â although some might call it fate. That night, the two had sat at the bar and discussed ideals and beliefs, how the country had gone to shit and it was all because of women and people that werenât white men. Carver offered a hearty gratuity to The Foundation for America and Nolan had put him on the board of trustees.
Over the years, the two had shared several bar and dinner conversations, their goals and desires still firmly in lockstep. Then the stories about the hybrids had been leaked by Vice President Wilson, and Carver had become a rabid opponent of the practice, encouraging Wilsonâs attempt at the Presidency and bringing Nolan along for the ride. It was Carverâs introduction to the glitterati of DC that had truly brought Nolan to the next level.
Carver introduced Nolan to Wilson and Hansen, then other senators and representatives, governors, mayors, and so on. Contacts that became donors or members, or both â like Wilson. Wilson loved the idea of The Foundation and had provided generously in his will for Nolan and his organization. It was some of that very money that would be used to help take down the House that Wilson had so very badly wanted to live in himself.
Rayland pulled his phone out and sent a text. It was time to get started.
First, he had to shut up that reporter and her old friends, then heâd take care of her new friends.
