Chapter 11

The next afternoon I headed over to Adam's to compare notes. Would a phone call have been easier? Probably, but now that I had another person under my roof—one who held an intense interest in the murder—I didn't feel comfortable discussing it on the phone while in my house. And I certainly wasn't going to set up shop at Darling's Diner or Canyon Coffee and discuss a killing. Besides, I would get to snuggle Adam while we talked, and if there was one thing I loved to do, it was snuggling my boyfriend.

Of course, Ruby had insisted on going with me, and I couldn't fight her for the exact same reason I couldn't discuss the murder on the phone: my guest. Even though Ned, Adam's ghost, had been clear he would prefer me to leave Ruby at home, I'd have to disappoint him. Trying to appease him and Ruby—she wanted to spend time with him, and he wanted to be left alone—had become an almost impossible task.

As we pulled up in front of Adam's condo, my heart sank when I didn't spot a police vehicle. “He said he'd be back by now,” I muttered as I parked.

“The copper's running late,” Ruby said. “We'll sit tight and wait for him. Probably got hung up listening to old Bruce-y Boy talk his ear off.”

I cut the ignition and leaned my head back against the headrest, still tired despite a good night's rest. A murder and subsequent investigation had that effect on me. Yet, I couldn't wait to hear what the police had uncovered while speaking with Wilder earlier and I wanted to share all the information I'd gathered about Yolanda, Tina, and Cody.

“You know, this investigation stuff suits you,” Ruby said. “People dying sucks, but when they do, something inside you comes alive.”

Crinkling my nose, I turned to my ghost. “I'm not sure whether to be offended or say thank you.”

She shrugged. “Either way is fine with me. I've never cared about offending anyone, and you shouldn't either. I mean, if you're acting like an outright jerk, that's one thing. But if you're going about your life, being kind, and you burrow under someone's skin, the heck with them. You're never going to please everyone. Remember that.”

Sage words of wisdom I wished I could follow. Sometimes, my anxiety made it impossible to not care what others thought.

“There he is!” Ruby yelled. “Woohoo! Let's go inside!”

Adam parked as we stepped out of my SUV. He waved and smiled while I hurried over to greet him.

“How's my favorite girlfriend?” he asked as he wrapped his arm around my shoulder and gave me a kiss on my forehead.

“I better be your only girlfriend,” I replied. With a snicker, I gently slapped his stomach.

He chuckled and gave me a squeeze. “Of course you are, silly woman. Is Ruby here with you?”

I nodded and we exchanged glances. I'd informed him in the past Ned had asked for me to leave her at home.

“Hi, Ruby,” Adam said. “I'm glad you could come over today.
