CHAPTER TWENTY-SIX

After reviewing the Jones house, Carolina returned to the resort. She opted not to go to Nik’s suite, and instead set up shop in the lobby. She thought she saw him at one point, gliding through, a phone pressed to his year. But he didn’t cast her so much as a glance.

Good, she thought. Her life, especially now, was too complicated for relationship drama. Instead, she worked silently, looking at pictures of crime scenes and dead families spanning decades. She also kept drifting back to the Brooker family.

Had they really been victims of a serial killer at the exact same time Josiah Zarchi wanted them dead? Could this be a world where such a coincidence existed?

She was tempted to drive to the state prison where Zarchi was currently rotting away, meet him face to face, and confront him. But just the thought of seeing his face, the permanent grin he always wore, nauseated her.

Besides, she’d never get a straight answer anyway. The only truth Zarchi spoke was the kind that benefited him. That was the way he worked. Nothing but manipulation.

She decided that staying far away from that man was for the best.

She was so focused on the files in front of her, sprawling over the log coffee table, that she never even heard Dana walk up behind her.

“Kind of public, don’t you think?” she asked, causing Carolina to jump from her chair. Her heart thudded in her chest.

“Shit,” Carolina said. “Give a girl some warning next time.”

Dana smiled. “Not really my fault you were zoned out and jumpy. In a hotel lobby with people coming and going constantly, I might add.”

Carolina leaned back, still wanting to focus on the files, but her eyes needed a break. She rubbed them, trying to clear away the bleariness.

“You finished for the day, or what?” Carolina asked.

Dana shrugged. “I’m always on call. Why, you hungry or something? Want me to whip you up a quiche or something like that?”

Carolina chuckled. “No, no quiche,” she said, though her stomach quickly growled in response. She was always hungry, wasn’t she? As much as she was tempted to ask Dana to fry her up some bacon, she shoved it away and cleared her throat. “I wanted to ask you about something.”

As if sensing the change in her tone, Dana furrowed her brows, walking around to the chair next to Carolina and plopping down. Carolina could smell the grease of the kitchen on the other woman’s clothes.

“What’s up?” she asked.

“It’s about the other day,” she said. “Our little road trip.”

“What about it? We dug up some bodies. I mean, it wasn’t something I’d look forward to doing again, but—”

“No,” Carolina said. “Not that part. I’m talking about the mini-mart. Where you pulled a knife on a stranger.”

Dana grew quiet, her eyes shifting to the floor as she shuffled her feet. She shrugged. “Yeah, so?”

“So,” Carolina said. “I saw the look in your eyes. I thought you were going to bury your knife in his throat. I’m still not sure you wouldn’t have if I hadn’t been there.
