Chapter 21- Chloe
Odin took us up a dark stone flight of stairs carved out of onyx and ivory. Small torches flickered on the walls, casting an eerie shadow across us. Tiny windows lined the outside wall, peering out to the Styx River, and I looked out with each step, trying to find Charon.
By the time weâd made it to our floor, I was exhausted, as if I had just raced up a mountain in the snow with only one shoe and a heavy load of bricks. As Odin opened the large wooden door, a smirk curled at the corners of his mouth.
âWelcome,â he said as he pushed open the door. We took a few steps and stopped, overwhelmed by the roomâs grandeur. The high domed ceiling overshadowed the circular floor, and candles around the room danced in merriment. Tapestries with images of ancient gods clashing in battles hung from the perimeter walls, interspersed with golden-framed paintings that reminded me of the Raven Society headquarters.
Seven different frames hung, depicting seven different gods. As I walked around the room, I couldnât help but feel the palpable energy emanating from each one. The first painting depicted a god with horns, his eyes burning with a fiery intensity that made me shiver. His muscles were taut, his body radiating raw power, and I could almost feel the heat emanating from his form.
The second painting showed a goddess, her long hair flowing like a river of gold. Her eyes were deep and powerful, and I could feel her gaze pierce through my soul. She held a staff in her hand, and I knew she commanded the power of the elements.
A third painting depicted a god with a serpentâs tail instead of legs. His eyes were cold and calculating, and I knew he held secrets and ancient knowledge that would drive men mad if they ever knew them.
As I looked at the other paintings, I felt a sense of awe wash over me. Each image depicted a god or goddess with their unique powers.
As if we were walking in a woodland, the air is filled with pine scents, almost like we were back in Scotland. An unexpected wave of homesickness washes over me, and I long for the familiarity of everyday life. Although it has only been a few months since we arrived in the Otherworld, I already missed the simplicity of normalcy.
The sound of movement caught my attention, and I looked toward the middle of the room, where an opulent chair sat. Lounging across it was a woman so radiantly gorgeous that time stopped when I looked at her. Her long red hair drifted around her shoulders like a cape of silk. Her skin was silken fair, and her emerald eyes flickered with fire. Her lips are as soft as rose petals, her stare as intoxicating as wine. Her body is like a drug, addictive and dangerous, but I canât stop staring, feeling inadequate standing near her.
Sydney whistled softly, and Bree smacked him on the head.
