The Curious Court of Miss Sassy

Robert D. Brewer

A scruffy tabby cat and an overweight calico sat at the edge of my lawn. It struck me as odd. I mean, I often see cats run through our yard when I look out the kitchen window, but these two sat motionless, almost unaware of each other as they stared at my house. My attention was broken when I heard a sniffle behind me.

Lori sat solemnly at the kitchen table. Her eyes were puffy and red, having cried most of the night; I had pretended to be asleep. Her mascara was smudged, but I knew better than to say anything. We didn’t need another fight before she went to work. I could tell that her mind was racing as she sipped coffee and watched me make breakfast.

“Are we at least going to finish the conversation?” Lori said.

“I thought we had.” My tone was harsher then I meant it to be. I emptied the last of the maple syrup to a warm in a saucepan. Then I measured equal parts of cornmeal and corn flour into a bowl.

“Don’t do that.” Lori lifted the cup to her lips, hesitated, and then placed it back on the table.

“Do what?”

“Look, this is a serious life decision. It deserves an adult conversation. Whenever we need to talk about a topic that you don’t like, you just stop talking about it.” Lori tapped her finger on a used sugar packet. “That doesn’t make the issue go away.”

Her words stung, because they were true. My first instinct was to snap at her, but that was my defenses kicking up once again. I knew we needed to talk if we were going to get past this. “We can talk about it, but it seems like we’re on the opposite ends of the spectrum. Usually when we disagree we can come to a compromise, but you can’t compromise on having a kid.”

“I’m not asking you to compromise, but I need to know how you really feel about it. Before we were married you said that you would like to have kids someday, but now you don’t. What changed?”

“Nothing really. I still just think of it as something I’d like to do in the future. I just don’t know if we’re ready right now.” I put a tablespoon of baking powder in the bowl. “I always imagined that I would be more secure before having a kid. We both work like crazy and are still basically living paycheck to paycheck. Kids are expensive.”

“People say there is never a right time to have one. If we always put it off waiting for the perfect time then we may end up waiting too long.” Lori thought for a minute. “What about Darin and Amanda or Jes and Kathie? They make less than we do and they both have had kids and seem to be making it. They don’t even own a house like we do.”

“Yeah, but they struggle.” I beat two eggs and some milk with a whisk.
