Chapter 20
âCaleb!â The blur with the gun called down the stairs. âCall Mac and tell him we found someone in his house.â
A second man ran up the spiral staircase, arriving out of breath and wheezing. âMom says thereâs someone staying in her room, Sam. Could be she didnât break in.â
Theo began to come out of the mute terror of waking to a gun. And in its place outrage. âIâd hardly break in to have a nap, would I, you fool! Put that bloody gun down and call Mac.â
Caleb hooted. âDang, she sounds like a Brit.â He squinted at her. âWho woulda thought⦠Mom ainât gonna be happy.â
The one called Sam lowered the gun and pulled out his phone. âMac? Itâs Sam.â He announced that he and Caleb had apprehended an intruder. A pause and he pulled the phone away from his ear, grimacing. âYeah, all right. Keep your shirt onâ¦Yeah, okay.â
Sam thrust the phone at Theo.
Mac was brief. âTheo, I apologize. These are my brothers, Sam and Caleb. Iâm on my wayâ¦Hopefully Iâll arrive before the dowager queen comes up the stairs.â
Theo gave the phone back to Sam. Caleb watched her grinning.
âWhereâs Mom?â Sam asked.
âShe was doing something about that fuckinâ dog.â
Instantly, Theo was on her feet. âHorse! What have you done to Horse?â
âI have fed him.â The woman who appeared at the top of the stairs was small and slight. An older version of the matriarch who had presided over the family portraits below. She fixed sharp blue eyes on Theo. âI donât believe weâve had the pleasure.â
Theo swallowed, wrong-footed. âIâ¦Iâm Theodosia Benton.â It felt idiotic to introduce herself to people who a couple of minutes ago had held her at gunpoint. âHow...how did you get in?â
âDear girl, I have a key. Cormac didnât mention heâd put aâ¦someone in my room.â
Theo began to apologize. She wasnât sure what she was apologizing for, but Nancy Etheridge made her feel like she should.
âItâs not your fault, Theodosiaâmy, that is a mouthful! Cormac should have let me knowâ¦Good heavens, one of us might have shot you!â
âWhat are you doing here?â Theo said almost to herself.
âI should be asking you that, donât you think?â
âYes, of course. Iâm sorryâ¦I didnât mean...â
âJesus!â Caleb squinted at her. âYouâre that girl in the papers.â
âYes,â Theo said. There seemed no point in denying it.
âSo...you and Mac...â Sam smirked.
Theo glared at him. What was the gun-toting idiot suggesting? For a time, nobody said anything. They all just stared at one another. And then a call from downstairs. Macâs voice. Theo took a breath. Thank God!
Nancy Etheridge began down the stairs. âShall we go ask Cormac to explain?â She motioned and her sons fell into step behind her.
Theo stayed where she was. Maybe it would be better to give Mac a chance to explain her presence. But her initial shock was being eroded by curiosity now, and she did wonder what Mac would tell his family. And so, she padded quietly down the staircase.
Nobody noticed her at first, too involved in argument.
