Chapter 9

The tension from the confrontation with Marcus still hung in the air as Piper and I returned to our hotel room. I just couldn't shake the chill that seemed to have settled over me like a cloak. My hands still felt unsteady, and I glanced over my shoulder every few minutes, half-expecting Marcus to reappear. Piper must have noticed because she nudged me gently with her elbow, giving me a reassuring smile.

"Hey," she said, her voice softening, "he's not going to scare us off. Besides, we still have a ton of research to dig through."

"We do?" I asked.

Piper nodded. "Those maps aren't the only thing my friend sent me. He followed up with a whole digital archive."

I blinked at her. "Is all this information really digitized?"

Piper shrugged. "It's a new era, Aunt Tess. People are starting to go paperless but they don't want to lose the past so yeah, they're putting it on file."

I nodded slowly. This was such a different world, with times changing so quickly these days. I always felt more comfortable with history than technology. But now, the history and technology were starting to mix together and I wasn't sure how I felt about that. With this case, it looked like I couldn't have one without the other.

I nodded, taking a deep breath and trying to calm myself. "Let's see what else we can find."

We settled in next to each other at the small desk. Murphy sat on his perch, dozing off after a long day of watching festival-goers.

Piper pulled out her laptop and opened the archive her friend had given her access to. It contained a wealth of information: old ship manifests, historical documents, and logs from Captain Blake's supposed treasure-hunting activities. It felt like an overwhelming amount of information, but if there was something in there that could help us understand Marcus's obsession, we needed to find it.

Piper started scrolling through pages of scanned documents while I watched over her shoulder. "You know," she said after a moment, "there has to be something we're missing. Something that connects all of this together. Marcus wouldn't be this desperate if it wasn't important."

"Yeah," I agreed. "It feels like there's a piece of the puzzle we haven't put in place yet."

After a few minutes of searching, Piper's eyes widened, and she pointed at the screen. "Wait—look at this."

She clicked on a file that opened up what looked like an old diary entry, dated back to the late 1800s. I would give anything to have that diary in my hands, but the digital version was the next best thing. The writing was scrawled and faded, but the words were legible enough. It was from a fisherman who claimed to have been part of Captain Blake's final expedition.

Piper leaned closer, reading aloud. "He talks about a set of coordinates… but they're not in the usual format. He says Blake used a different kind of system—something about nautical terms and celestial navigation. It sounds like he was trying to make it hard for anyone else to find the treasure.
