CHAPTER 13
âHave any problems finding the house?â Marty asked as she opened the door and motioned for Carl to come in.
âNo, just plugged it into my GPS, and I was good to go. Interesting residential area for nice antiques. I usually donât see many things of value in an area like this, and if there are any, they were usually inherited.â
âThatâs pretty much the case here, although what youâll be appraising, the books, is a collection by my clientâs husband,â Marty said.
âI see that Patron is here. Anything I should know about?â Carl asked, as he bent down to pet the big dog. Theyâd become fast friends when threats had been made on Carlâs life a few months earlier, and Patron had stayed at his home and protected him.
âWell, there was a little incident this morning,â Marty said.
âJust tell me Laura wasnât involved, and I can handle it,â Carl said.
When Marty said, âShe wasnât involved,â Carl visibly relaxed. Then she told him about the theft sheâd discovered at the storage unit earlier that morning as well as the burglary unit at the police station being involved.
âJeff became concerned about me being here alone before you got here, so he went home and picked up Patron. He felt better knowing that Patron would be here even though Jeff and one of the policemen in the burglary unit completely checked out the premises and determined that everything was fine. No one was here, and there was no evidence of anyone having been here.â
âWhat did your client say about the theft?â Carl asked.
âShe doesnât know about it. Mrs. Espinoza is at a spa located just outside of town for a few days, you know, the one that doesnât allow any contact with their guests when theyâre in there. Sheâs due home tomorrow, so Iâll have to tell her then.â
âWhat about her husband?â Carl asked.
âHeâs away on police business. I might have mentioned that heâs actually a detective and technically works under Jeff, but not directly, so he doesnât know anything about it either.â
âWell, as long as Jeff felt it was safe for you to work here, that makes me feel a lot better. And particularly with Patron being here. Show me where the books are,â Carl said, as he picked up his appraisal gear.
âThe study is down the hall. Last door on the left,â Marty said as they walked towards it.
After Carl had walked in and looked around for a few minutes, he said, âInteresting. This guy collects all over the board. Most book collectors have a special area, but thereâs about every genre in the world represented here. Looks to me like he was strictly going after what would be a deal. Wish I had a list of what he paid for the books.â
âMy client never mentioned one, although youâd think he might have one in a desk drawer or on his computer, but those are off limits to us. He has to have some way of knowing whether or not heâs made money on a book.
