The cops didn’t pay at Golden Star. Burping, they drove him home to Dimasalang, holding his friend hostage in the jeep as he went inside the house.

He woke his Lola up, but she said she had no money. He crept into his Dad’s and Mom’s room and saw that they were asleep. He reached for his Dad’s trousers which were hanging from a hook, took the wallet out and got a twenty-peso bill.

On his way out, he noticed a half-finished bottle of Scotch in the sala and picked it up. He told his Lola he should be back very soon, but in case he wasn’t, to wake up his Dad and tell him that he was in trouble with some cops outside. He assured her that he could handle it for now.
