Chapter 15
Itâs Friday afternoon. Flo is behind the counter. Iâm in the kitchen, baking.
Allegedly.
What Iâm really doing is staring into the void, while my thoughts go in circles.
The FERJ meeting at Roseâs last night was very different in mood from the previous ones. Even though I was the only one on the team to have met Nadia, her death was at the forefront of everybodyâs mind.
Was there a connection? Could it be a mere coincidence that Mauriceâs ex-wife died in the same way, just a week after him? Will the cops write her death off as a ânatural eventâ or will they have a medical examiner perform an autopsy?
Will Capitaine Adinian be able to persuade his commandant to let him investigate?
Will Adinian want to persuade his commandant?
Boy, Iâd been so sure that if anyone had poisoned Maurice Sauve, it would be Nadia! Except sheâs dead now, likely poisoned by the exact same substance as her ex in the exact same way.
Rose, whoâd been cheering me on since the outset, began to say that maybe I should take a step back from thisâall of us, in factâand let the gendarmes do their job.
But how can I?
Today, Iâm supposed to start baking samples for the Lavender Show and finish decorating the jumbo wedding cake. Tomorrow, Eric and I are delivering it to the Prouttes at their one of a kind residence that Iâve heard so much about from Rose. Until yesterday afternoon, I was looking forward to seeing the mini Versailles with my own eyes. Now I donât care. Iâm too restless. I canât even focus long enough to pick a flavor for my samples.
I roll my eyes upward. Lavender, dumbo! Itâs for the Lavender Show.
I reach for my phone and pull up Catâs number, which goes to show how desperate the situation is. We fell out because I refused to take her visions seriously, and now Iâm about to swallow my pride and ask her to scour the future for a possible clue.
Because the one I got from the past turned out useless.
Except, hereâs the thing. Assuming Catâs visions are real, they wonât be of much use to me, either. For Cat to catch a glimpse of somebodyâs future, she must meet them first. Talk to them. Feel their auras or whatever she calls it. Both Maurice and Nadia Sauve are dead now, which means Cat has zero chances of talking to them. Oh, and by the way, they have no future to glimpse.
I call Cat anyway, just to talk.
âI had a vision about you,â is the first thing she says to me.
âAbout me? What vision?â
âA bad one.â
âOoh,â I intone. âIâm scared.â
âFor once, please take it seriously, Julie. Youâre in too much danger.â
âOf what nature?â I ask.
Thereâs silence. âIâm not sure.â
âThen what makes you sure Iâm in danger?â
âListen,â she says. âMy visions are usually allegorical, not literal. If I tell you exactly what I saw, it wonât make much sense to you.â
âTry me.â
Another silence.
âThe symbols I saw are meaningful only to me,â Cat finally says.
