‘You wanted me to be what?’ Amelia asked just to be certain she’d heard Sally correctly.

They were sitting on the bed in Amelia’s room not long after the DPD delivery of a whole host of costumes arrived. The party was still a few days away but Sally had wanted to have everyone’s outfit prepared well in advance. Her professionalism had well and truly kicked in with her already having sketched out the make-up for many of the people she was dressing. Gideon was unzipping the costume protectors and giggling over each discovery.

‘Don’t worry, we chickened out at the last minute,’ Sally said soothingly.

‘Thank God for that!’ Amelia had nearly had a fit when Sally said she’d originally thought Amelia could go as Princess Leia, dressed in the gold lamé bikini. Apart from the modesty issue, she’d have frozen to death!

‘What else is there?’ Sally called over her shoulder.

‘Apart from the main ones I specifically requested for us, I just asked for a selection of interesting costumes the others can take their pick from and boy, have they come up trumps! They’ve even sent a Cyberman costume.’ Gideon pointed over to a gigantic box by the window where a silver plastic foot was protruding from the packaging.

‘What are you guys going as?’ Amelia asked, not for the first time.

‘We’re not saying.’ Sally smiled enigmatically.

‘It’s a surprise.’ Gideon blew her a kiss.

‘That’s so unfair,’ Amelia grumbled.

‘We’re the ones organising this,’ Sally pointed out, ‘let us keep a little mystery to ourselves. Consider it like the bride’s wedding dress. No one sees that until the big day.’

‘Do you want to show Amelia what we thought would be good for her?’ Sally said.

‘Found it!’ Gideon called as he started to pull something out of a costume protector.

All Amelia could see was sheaths of diaphanous white fabric as he brought it over.

‘Ta-daaaaa! It’s a replica costume of the bride of Frankenstein, complete with conical wig with lightning bolts running up the sides! And there’s a pair of massive high-heeled thigh-high gladiator-style sandal boots which you could wear with it.’

‘Wow! That’s amazing!’ Amelia held it up to her. It puddled on the ground at her feet.

‘I could always take it up?’ Sally offered.

‘And in,’ Gideon added. ‘It looks as if it was made for a six-foot shot-put champion.’

He was right. It was huge.

‘Let me work my magic on it,’ Sally said, gently taking it away from Amelia.

‘Are you sure?’ Amelia asked, not wanting to put Sally to any trouble but also loving the look of it, along with the boots. She missed wearing her heels.

‘Leave it with me.’ Sally grinned. ‘You shall go to the ball!’

‘Look at this!’ Gideon held up a werewolf costume. ‘How about for Lawrence? He’s so quiet and reserved I’d wager he’s harbouring a secret identity. And all that fur would make him uncomfortable which serves him right for being such a shit to you, Sally.’

‘Oh, and that would be ideal for Ross!’ Sally pointed to a Fred Astaire-style top-hat-and-tails outfit, complete with cane and tap shoes.
