THIRTY

“Izzy, come here.” Ed Harrington called out as soon as she entered the incident room.

She was aware of eyes on her as she crossed the room, but did not see Jack.

“Boss?” Izzy stood in front of Harrington. She wanted to ask why Mike Wilson had been arrested, but knew she couldn’t.

“I know you think Mike Wilson is innocent, Izzy, but I have my reasons for arresting him.” Harrington raised his voice so everyone in the room could hear. “You interviewed Ethan Walton yesterday, didn’t you?”

“We did.”

“He came into the station earlier today, and said he had something to tell us. Rosie Wilson said she was going to divorce Mike. She wanted to marry Ethan.”

“Why didn’t he mention this when we were with him yesterday?”

“Told me he wanted to, but needed time to think about it. Overnight must have been long enough.”

“Did he say Rosie told Mike about any of this?”

“He claims she did. Said both of them told him to his face at their house. Ethan said Mike punched him.”

“Any sign of bruising?”

“He said it was a month back. Mike also said he’d kill Rosie before he’d watch her walk away with another man and take his daughter from him. Except Ethan claims Grace is his.”

“Mike told Sarah he knew Grace wasn’t his but didn’t want to know who the father was. Do you believe Ethan?”

“He’s a credible witness. You took a DNA swab from him, and we have Grace and Rosie Wilson’s on record. It should be simple enough to determine if he’s telling the truth.” Harrington scanned the room. “His statement is on the system for you all to look at. Do that and see what you think. However, the main thing you all need to know is what Carys discovered last night. It’s the reason I requested the arrest warrant. Tell them, Carys.”

Carys rose from her chair. “HOLMES threw up Mike Wilson’s name concerning an old case. He was arrested twenty years ago on a charge of GBH. He had just turned sixteen. It looks like a playground argument that got out of hand. Mike was waiting for the kid when he left the school premises. Only one witness – Rosie Clayton, as she was then. The case against Wilson was solid, until the lad he beat up dropped the charges, and Rosie claimed she wasn’t there. Even if she was, nothing happened. I’ve added details to the case file, so you can all take a look.”

“Does this change how we regard Mike now, boss?” Izzy’s belief in Mike’s innocence was looking less sure.

“We have to go with the evidence we have today. The accusation from Ethan Walton, and Wilson’s history of serious violence, means I had to act. He will be processed and kept in a cell. We’re probably doing him a favour, since he tried to kill himself. I’ll also get a shrink to speak to him again. Maybe he’ll save us all a bunch of work and confess.”

“Only if he did it, boss.”

Harrington shook his head.
