A wave of tiredness crashed over me as we walked down yet another hallway. Even the cats were lagging a bit as they sniffed every inch they covered. Razzy’s tail was drooping, and even Rudy, normally able to race around for what seemed like hours, was slowing down. Gus kept walking at his usual pace, his lion-like stride covering plenty of ground.

“There are just so many scents,” Razzy said, looking at me over her shoulder, eyes wide. “It’s so difficult to process everything.”

“We can go back to the room, sweetheart,” I said, scooping her into my arms for a quick cuddle. “You don’t have to work your little paws to the bone.”

She squiggled in my grip, eyes blazing as she stared at me, indignant.

“That’s not an option. We’re here to solve this case and help justice. Let me down, I can keep going.”

I gently placed her down before she could leap for it and shook my head as she jogged ahead.

“They love doing this, don’t they?” Ben asked, slipping his hand into mine as we followed the cats. “I mean, I knew that, but seeing them work like this puts any police dog to shame. Why do you think they’re so driven?”

I cocked my head to the side as I thought about it. Before I’d developed the ability to speak with Razzy, I’d assumed she spent most of her day napping. Nothing had surprised me more than learning she enjoyed solving crimes more than I did.

“I think it’s because it’s what we love to do,” I said as we rounded the turn that I thought would lead us to the sitting room where I’d found Ed. “And they want to help us. People don’t give cats enough credit.”

“That’s probably the first thing I learned once I met you and you finally came clean about what you could do,” Ben said, tossing me a wink.

“Hey, in my defense, that’s not an easy conversation starter,” I said, slapping him lightly on the arm. “And it didn’t go over so well, either.”

Ben’s face clouded as he remembered what had happened when I finally told him I could talk to Razzy and she proved it with a demonstration of her texting abilities. Our relationship was just starting back then, and he’d been thrown for a loop, disappearing for several weeks. Another murder case brought us back together, and the rest was history. That time, will dark, had eventually led to the joy we were experiencing now, and although it had been difficult, it was certainly worth it.

“Water under the bridge. Look at us now. Thanks to Anastasia, you can understand the cats as well, which has made our lives much easier.”

“How many people have been tromping through here?” Razzy asked, her tone irritable as she sat in front of the door of the sitting room.

“From the smell of it, all of them,” Rudy said, scuffing the floor with his paw. “This is hard. Everything is blending together.”

“Have faith, kid,” Gus said. “We’ll sort this out.
