Please protect Tiara. Please protect my family and yours and all the people of this land. Protect them from the threat I’ll one day pose to them.

Arthur sat there mute for a time, but eventually nodded his agreement over and over again.

“I understand,” he said. “I’ll absolutely become a knight someday. I’ll protect you and those you care for. I’ll protect Mom, Dad, and all the people in the kingdom with everything in my power. That’s the kind of knight I’ll become!”

Vice Commander Clark had approached during our conversation, and he now set his hands on Arthur’s shoulders.

“Shall we go?” he asked softly.

Behind him, the commander was crying. I didn’t know when it started. He covered his eyes with those large hands of his, but the tears snuck between the gaps in his fingers.

I tried to go to him, but he said, “Your Highness…”

“Yes?”

The commander fell to the ground at my feet, pressing his forehead into the floor with a thud. “Thank you for saving my life. I’m so happy that I get to see my friends, my troops. My family…” Sobs interrupted his words, and I found his choking voice uncannily similar to Arthur’s, but he pushed on. “But more than that… My son is to become a knight! I can hardly believe my ears.”

Arthur gawked at his father, shocked all over again by this display. For a moment, the room fell silent aside from sobs. Then the commander forced out one more sentence: “I’m so glad to be alive!”

It made me happier than anything I’d heard all day. Tears stung my eyes. I bent to wrap my arms around the commander, who was curled up so small even I towered over him.

That body had saved and protected so many people. His troops, the upper ranks of the order, and his family all loved him so much for the sacrifices he’d made time after time for them.

And yet, despite all he did, the commander didn’t survive in the game.

In ORL, the ambushers swarmed Commander Roderick. Then the cliff collapsed. He never got a chance to save his troops or reconcile with his son. I realized then what grief the Roderick of the game must have carried in his heart as he died that day.

But in this world, I’d been able to save him.

“Thank goodness!”

I hugged the commander close, letting my tears flow.
