Spinning Webs

At four in the afternoon, a Mexican couple calmly walked outside the American barbecue restaurant on Nieuwe Spiegelstraat 50. Hilo, the cab driver who transported them from the hotel to the restaurant, was a Christian Lebanese immigrant who seemed happy at the chance to chat with foreigners. He claimed the Dutch treated him and other immigrants as if they were air.

“How far is it to the Public House of Art?” Gustavo asked, sliding a generous tip into Hilo’s outstretched palm.

“It is really close. Five minutes’ walk down the street and you are there,” he immediately added, “thank you, good people.” His toothless grin emphasized his meaning. “And yes, take my phone number.” He pulled a card out of his shirt pocket, adding, “I will always be delighted to provide you with my services.”

Gustavo acceded to Maria’s addiction to American food. They identified Lombardo’s restaurant on the route to the gallery and sat down to examine the proffered menu with interest. They ordered samples from nearly every dish on the menu but concentrated on the varied mini hamburgers, which were served on delicate chinaware trays. After washing down their meal with cold beer, Gustavo admitted to his dinner companion that the delicacies they had been served pleased him greatly.

A short time later the two of them were already slowly making their way down the sidewalk, Maria’s arm interlaced with Gustavo’s, as the street began to fill with display window shoppers and passersby returning from their jobs. They fit in naturally with the Dutch crowd, seeming completely local to all outward appearances. However, a slightly more diligent observation of their faces revealed signs of high tension and concentration typical of the beginning of an operation with planned but by no means certain conclusion.
