We made our way back to the train station and started home in silence. With every step, I counted one two three. Something new and as terrible as what we had gone through was now looming: the prospect of sneaking back into my own home. I didn’t know how late it was or how long it would take us to get back, but my belief that we might still have a chance of returning before our absence was noted had dissipated entirely. My mother was certainly home by now. She had certainly put her head around my bedroom door to make sure I was asleep. She had seen no illusory lump under my blanket. No paper-stuffed human facsimile had been planted there to delude her. She had certainly begun calling my name, and hearing no reply, she had begun walking the halls. Here, a few variables entered the picture. It was growing light in the distance. Did that mean she had given up her search and called the police? Was her terror vast enough to override her fear of them? Did she believe they had the authority to begin searching the apartments she could not—those belonging, of course, to any suspect bachelor who might have snatched me, unobserved, from the corridor?
