“Misdeeds?” Andrea asked aloud as she looked up from the paper. She shook her head, dazed. “What kind of hold did she have on these men?”

“I’ve been wondering the same thing,” Mel said.

“They’re, at minimum, accessories to her crimes, including Knox…if we can ever prove them.”

Mel ran a hand through her hair and down the back of her neck. “There were unidentified fingerprints on the shotgun that Owen took a blow from. Chuck’s are on it, of course, as is one the lab identifies as coming from Dale. He probably took the gun from her and put it back in the rack like he says he did.”

“What are the chances of us getting prints from Eunice before the embalming process starts?”

“Pretty good,” Mel said. She picked an evidence bag up off the credenza behind her and set it down in front of the Deputy DA. “The water glass from her nightstand is in there.”

Andrea leaned back in her chair and studied Mel. “I misjudged you, Sheriff Crane. I apologize for that.”

Mel dipped her head in acknowledgment.

“One last question?”

“What’s that?”

“What are you going to tell your mother and your uncle?”

“That…I don’t know.”
