Alvin stored Senator Mayfield’s body in the small office resting in the back kitchen of Sarah’s coffee shop, turned off the heat, and hauled butt out the back door. Because the power was out and the coffee shop was operating off generator power, entry and escape was fairly simple. Also, the security alarm, which any bozo could bypass, wasn’t very difficult to outsmart. For now, Alvin assumed, stepping out into a frozen, white, snow-filled alley full of howling winds, the body of Senator Mayfield was safe; or so he hoped.

“Alvin the Great must roam the frozen tundra and keep watch for the enemy,” he whispered in a brave stage voice that even to himself sounded dorky and lame. He quickly slammed a black ski mask over his face, yanked a black hood over his head, tucked his body into the icy winds, and began walking down the alley. Five minutes later, he turned around and hurried back to the coffee shop. “Too cold…Alvin the Great needs to warm up first,” he said through shivering teeth as he stepped back into the kitchen of the coffee shop, closed the door, and quickly turned the heat back up.

As Alvin warmed his hands, Sarah stood studying the small black box that had begun beeping in her purse. “Someone tripped the hidden laser at the coffee shop,” she explained. “Three guesses who.”

Conrad rubbed the back of his neck. “I think we know who the winner is.”

“It’s a good thing you had those lasers installed,” Andrew said as he checked his gun. “Using a dummy security system was also smart.”

“A trick Pete taught me,” Sarah explained, smiling at Pete as she put the black box away. “Well, I guess we better get moving.”

“We?” Conrad scoffed. “No, ma’am. Amanda is taking you right back to the cabin.”

Sarah shook her head. “Conrad, the hospital is seven good miles from our home and less than a mile from town. I’m not up for another seven-mile ride, not in this weather.”

“Me, neither,” Amanda said. “What are you…fruity in the head?” She rolled her eyes and then grabbed Sarah’s hand. “Come on, love, I’ll drive you to the coffee shop. Maybe we’ll finally catch Alvin the Great.”

“My wife will ride with me,” Conrad informed Amanda. “Pete, you drive that loudmouth back to town, okay?”

“Loudmouth…why, I should flatten your lip!” Amanda shook her fists at Conrad. Conrad rolled his eyes. “One day, you bloke…your body will vanish and be buried deep in the Alaskan wilderness.”

“You two,” Sarah sighed, having had enough. “Conrad…Amanda…you know what, you two drive back to town together. Pete, you’re with me. Let’s go.” Sarah grabbed Pete’s hand and walked him out of the hospital, leaving Conrad and Amanda fussing at each other as they followed.

“See what you did? You upset my wife!” Conrad barked at Amanda, slapping on a pair of black winter gloves.

“I did no such thing…idiot,” Amanda barked back as she slapped on her muffler and prepared for an icy ride. She glanced behind her and saw Andrew grinning.
