As I had expected – or hoped – our progress to the police station was uneventful, the most dramatic event being when Hefty arrested a police constable for impersonating a police constable. Fortunately, I was the only one to notice.

Agnust and Gerrund waited outside. It would not do to enter the station with a bodyguard.

Sergeant Webb was at the desk as usual. He was currently engaged in the construction of a matchstick model. It had doubled in size to almost six inches high since I had last seen it. He would not say what it was meant to be, and I suspected that he had not yet decided.

‘The Inspector say goo straight through,’ he told me, and I hoped that he would be able to open his charge book when it was next required for there was glue over the cover and down the side.
